The Adventures of Finley The Fish

Word Wonder World Series K-736. 1976. LP

Front cover illustration:
Big, green Finley the Fish leaps over blue water wearing a white sailor's cap emblazoned with a red "F."  He plays an unplugged electric guitar and appears to sing (as small white bubbles emit from his mouth).  Leaping in front of him are two smaller fishes: a pink "groupie" girl fish wearing nothing but a smile and a red bow, and an orange fish wearing a striped bedouin head cover.  On the sandy beach horizon behind the fish, one human walks as two humans ride two camels towards two palm trees and a small, walled Arabian city with a domed mosque and a minaret.

FLOYD:  And now, boys and girls, presenting Finley the Fish!

Finley the Fish

My name is Finley, I'm a little fish
And if I had my way, here is what I would wish
I wish that every church had a swimming pool
So on Sunday morning, I could swim in Sunday School

Yes
Ho, ho, ho, ho
Oh, yes

Yes, I'm just a little fishy, but I have so much fun
Learning about the Bible and teaching everyone
Telling boys and girls about the only way
But most of all teaching them what Jesus has to say

Ho, ho, ho, ho,
I sure do have fun
Ho, ho, ho, ho,
I'm getting Thirsty

Banter

FLOYD: Hey, Finley, how did you learn to sing so well?
FINLEY: It just takes Talent.
FLOYD: OK, Finley, how about another song?
FINLEY: The Sea of Galilee.

The Sea of Galilee

The Sea of Galilee, oh, come and swim with me
We'll have fun, everyone, join us and you'll see
The Sea of Galilee, a fun, fun place to be
So swim a long and sing along on the Sea of Galilee

Just keep swimming
Ho, ho

Oh, the Sea of Galilee made Gospel history
'Cause Jesus talked and Jesus walked on the Sea of Galilee
The Sea of Galilee, a fun, fun place to be
So, swim along and sing a song on the Sea of Galilee

Ho, ho

Banter

FLOYD: Finley, in the Bible, who said "I'll make you fishers of men?"
FINLEY:  Jesus told Peter, in Matthew 4:19.
FLOYD: Right.

Fishers of Men

Fishers of men, fishers of men
I'll make you fishers of men
Jesus said, just follow me
And I'll make you fishers of men

Peter was fishing one day by the sea
When Jesus said, come and follow me
He threw down his net, and then began
To follow Jesus and fish for men

The Bible is still so true today
About what Jesus had to say
He wants you now, just like back then
To follow him and fish for men

Fishers of men, fishers of men
I'll make you fishers of men
Jesus said, just follow me
And I'll make you fishers of men

Let's go fishing

Banter

FLOYD: What's the next song, Finley?
FINLEY: A Porpoise For Your Life.
FLOYD: You mean A Purpose For Your Life.
FINLEY:  That's what I said, A Porpoise For Your Life
FLOYD: OK, Finley, get your friend, Gilley, to hep you sing it, OK?
FINLEY: OK, a-one, two, three, four...

A Porpoise For Your Life

Do you have a porpoise for your life
A reason to be happy and free
Do you have a reason for living
If you do, then sing along with me

Do you have a porpoise for your life
Grab a fin and sing with me
You can have a porpoise for your life
With Jesus for eternity

Yes, I have a porpoise for living
That's why I'm free of heartaches and strife
'Cause I've got Jesus in my heart
So that's the real porpoise for my life

Do you have a porpoise for your life
Grab a fin and sing along with me
You can have a porpoise for your live
With Jesus for eternity

What is the porpoise for your life
hmmm....

Banter

FLOYD: Finley, do you know what is America's favorite pastime?
FINLEY: I don't want to think about it.
FLOYD: Aw, come on, Finley, it's fishing.
FINLEY: Ooooh.

Fishing

Fishing, fishing, everyone's going fishing
Fishing, fishing, everyone's having fun
Fishing, fishing, everyone's going fishing
Fishing, fishing, fun for everyone

Except the fish

Fishing, fishing, Summer time's made for fishing
Fishing, fishing, fun for everyone
Fishing, fishing, anytime's good for fishing
Fishing, fishing, everyone's having fun

Except the fish

Banter

FINLEY: And, now, I would like to have a word with you about fishing on Sunday.

Sunday Fishing

Sunday morning is God's day, so let's keep it that way
So, if you want to catch a fish, then do it on another day

There's a fellow out here fishing, he's got a hook and a worm
But he won't ever catch a fish as far as I'm concerned
Because it's Sunday Morning, he's breaking one of God's rules
And instead of being here fishing, he should be in Sunday school

Sunday morning is God's day, so let's keep it that way
So, if you want to catch a fish, then do it on another day

It's not that fishing is all that bad, but there's a time for everything
And Sunday morning is the time for praising Jesus Christ our King
There's six other days in the week, now listen to what I say
If you just got to go on fishin' don't do it on God's day

Sunday morning is God's day, so let's keep it that way
So, if you want to catch a fish, then do it on another day

Ho, ho

Gilley

There was once a little fish named Gilley who couldn't learn to swim
So all of the other fishes just made fun of him
So he'd just splish and spalsh and jump trying to swim to no avail
Moving along the bottom, stirring dirt up with his tail

Come and let's play, Gilley would say, as he left a foggy trail
Not today, all the fishes would say, until you learn how to use your tail
Then they'd all leave, and Gilley would grieve, because he had no friends
Would this sad way of livin' for Gilley ever end

Gilley moved along the bottom of the lake singin' a sad, sad song
Stirrin' up dirt and cloudin' the water as he would move along
What would he ever, ever do, his future looked so dim
No fish would ever play with him because he could not swim

Then one day, a hungry shark started chasin' all of his friends
Then all the fishes were scramblin' and yellin', they knew it was the end
Then Gilley got so excited trying to swim and flee
That he stirred up so much dirt that the shark couldn't even see

Then, after the cloudy water had cleared, and everyone could see
Gilley looked around and saw his friends all safe as they could be
Now Gilley was a hero, he finally got his wish
'Cause now all the fishes want to play with the hero named Gilley the fish

Hooray for Gilley

Banter

FLOYD: Hey, Finley, how 'bout gettin' your friend, Gilley, to sing along with you on this song, OK?
FINLEY: OK...Gilley!

Everybody's Goin' Fishing

Everybody's goin' fishing
That's everybody's wish
Everybody's having fun
Everybody but the fish

They're packin' picnic lunches
With chicken, pie and ham
Right beside the water
Right here where I am

When they're all stuffed and full of food
With their favorite dish
They grab their hooks and lines and poles
'Cause now it's time to fish

Everybody's goin' fishing
That's everybody's wish
Everybody's having fun
Everybody but the fish

When you go to see a doctor,
When you're nervous as can be
The doctor says you need to go fishin'
Now, what's he got against me

When a little fish is feelin' bad
I don't tell him this thing
You'll start to feelin' better
If you catch a human being

Well, everybody's goin' fishing
That's everybody's wish
Everybody's having fun
Everybody but the fish

Well, let's make an agreement
For both of us that's fair
You stay out of the water
And I will stay out of the air

And here's one even better
If you'll abide by my wish
I won't catch any people
If you won't catch any fish

Well, everybody's goin' fishing
That's everybody's wish
Everybody's having fun
Everybody but the fish

Ho, ho

Banter

FLOYD: Finley, did you know that Jesus loves everybody in the whole world?
FINLEY: He even loves me and you?
FLOYD: That's right.

He Even Loves Me & You
(mp3)

Hey, fellas, come and listen to me
I got a story to tell on how to be free
Jesus is the only way
'Cause he loves me and you today

He loves Tommy the Tuna, Timmy the Trout
He don't want to leave anyone out
Bennie the Bluegill, and Bobby the Brim
All we gotta do is follow Him

He loves Sammy the Sailfish and Barney the Bass
It makes no difference about his past
The crappie, the salmon, the mackerel, too
He even loves me and you

(repeat)

Banter

FINLEY: It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a rocket!
FLOYD: Finley, what in the world are you talkin' about?
FINLEY: I'm talkin' about Super Fish!

Super Fish

I'm Super Fish, swimmin' round and 'round
I'm a big mouth bass with the biggest mouth in town
So, all you little minnows, you better get out of my way
'Cause I'm Super Fish and I haven't had much today

Yes, Super Fish, a smart little guy
You just can't catch Super Fish, you might as well not try
Because I know my way around every crick and nook
You never will find Super Fish on the end of a hook

Fishermen keep tryin' to find out my game
With spools and plugs and worms and things, but it's all in vain
Cause I just jump and laugh at them and give a hearty swish
You never can catch me 'cause I'm Super Fish

Super Fish

Banter

FLOYD: Finley, this next song teaches an important lesson, to never be negative, but always be what?
FINLEY: Positive!
FLOYD: That's right

Negative-I-Tus

Don't get negative-i-tus, be positive and glad
Think about the good times and not about the bad
Keep your mind on things that are pure and good
Don't get negative-i-tus, be positive like you should

No, don't get negative-i-tis, it makes you feel so bad
But instead be happy, don't go around being sad
Keep your mind on things that are pure and good
Don't get negative-i-tus, be positive like you should

That's right

Banter

FLOYD: Finley, do you know who cares more about us than anybody else in the world
FINLEY: I sure do--God cares!

God Cares

God cares, God cares, even about you
About where you're goin', about the things you do
About your times of trouble and happiness, too
God cares all about you

God cares, God cares, about the things we say
He watches over us every night and day
He cares about our troubles and happinesses, too
God cares all about you
God cares all about you
Yes, God cares all about you
